Book Review – Strange Glory by Charles Marsh

Strange GlorySeveral years ago, I read Eric Metaxas’ biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. I absolutely loved that book. It introduced me to the details of the life of one of my favorite authors and theologians.

So when Charles Marsh’s biography, Strange Glory: A Life Of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, was released, I was excited to read it, to see what else I could add to my knowledge of Bonhoeffer’s life and times.

Right off the bat, I noticed that Metaxas and Marsh examined Bonhoeffer’s life differently. Where Metaxas looked at the events and circumstances of his life, Marsh dug into the theological and philosophical aspects of Bonhoeffer’s thinking. There were several interesting insights that I gathered from this different perspective.

But that’s the only positive I took from this biography. The more I read it, the more I sensed that Marsh wrote, imposing his twenty-first century views and thoughts on a life and time from nearly a hundred years ago. Marsh is unable to see Bonhoeffer in light of his own era and culture, and he interprets Bonhoeffer’s life in light of current American culture, particularly in light of Bonhoeffer’s sexuality.

Though Marsh never come out and explicitly states that Bonhoeffer experienced same sex attraction, he implies heavily that Dietrich Bonhoeffer was romantically in love with his friend, Eberhard Bethge.

This idea is absolutely ridiculous.

Coffee Break – 08.04.2014

H O M E – This short film is incredibly cinematic and deeply moving. It kind of makes me want to head out and enjoy a cup of coffee on the river near our home. In this film, the coffee is made with an Aeropress, which makes a pretty good cup, but a Chemex would be even better.

Put Your Phone Down – I often wonder if we’ve become too dependent upon our mobile devices. It seems as if we focus more on capturing the moment than experiencing the moment. I was reminded of this at a recent Springfield Cardinals baseball game. Every phone in the stadium was out capturing the fireworks after the game, mine included. Suddenly I realized that an image later wasn’t the same thing as experiencing the moment in the now. I quietly put my phone in my pocket and just simply enjoyed the display.

Bonsai Tree Art – Bonsai is one of the hobbies I’ve tried to enjoy over the years. I fail at this. I can’t keep a tree alive for more than a few months. I’ve resigned myself to the realm of fascinated observation. But this artist takes the concept to a whole new level. Pretty amazing, actually.

Memorize Scripture: 2 Timothy 4:8

In last week’s passage, Paul indicated that his time on earth was drawing to a close. However, he is not fearful. Instead, his demeanor is one of hopeful anticipation, looking forward to the time when he will be in the presence of the Lord, along with all those who have partnered with him in longing for the second coming of Christ.

Take a look at this encouraging passage in 2 Timothy 4:8:

2 Timothy 4:8

Paul continues his athletic metaphor in this passage, describing a crown of righteousness. This is not the royal crown, belonging to the king. Rather, it is the victor’s crown, much like the garland that early Olympians received when victorious.

The phrase “crown of righteousness” has a couple of different potential meanings. First, it could be translated as “the crown which is righteousness,” meaning a right standing before God. This is similar to the various uses of the phrase “crown of life” in structure (James 1:12; Revelation 2:10), or the phrase “grown of glory” (1 Peter 5:4), and seems to be the likely meaning.

However, the phrase “crown of righteousness” could also be a simple possessive, being a crown given as a result of a righteous life, or right living. The drawback to this perspective however, is that a strict grammatical rule means that this crown belongs to righteousness itself, and is not necessarily an award for the ones receiving it. This stretches things a bit too far for Paul’s theology, giving the first option much more credence.

Summer is always a very busy time in ministry. This late in the summer, however, things are starting to slow down. Camp has finished for the season. And last week, our church held our Vacation Bible School. That was a very busy week, but a very fun week, too.

My hope is that with summer slowing down, my life will slow down a bit also. I’m not holding my breath. Fall brings with it back to school stuff, football games, and a swarm of its own busyness. The only difference is that it’s a little more predictable.

One of the things I’m looking forward to this fall is the high school football season. One of the community organizations I’m involved with is our local Kiwanis Club, and our fall project each year is selling funnel cakes at all the home games. So, if you’re in the area on a Friday night, swing by and grab one. They’re pretty good!

Fall also means my annual trip to Colorado, to attend CIY Wilderness. This is my number one event each year. It draws my spiritual and personal life back to a focus, and deepens my faith. For the past couple of years, this has been held at the YMCA of the Rockies. This year, we get to go back to Bear Trap Ranch, near Colorado Springs. This is one of my favorite places on earth. I keep a metal tag with the GPS coordinates of Bear Trap on or near me at all times, to remind me of the spiritual benefits I’ve received while there. I love that place! This happens in early October, so even though it’s still a ways off, it’s looming on the horizon, and will be here before I know it.

Jungle Safari VBS

This week will be a crazy week around here, and things will be a bit slower here at JeffRandleman.com. Our church is having our summer Vacation Bible School all week, and it will be a huge event. The past few days have been very hectic as our team put everything together, from the stage and main areas, to lesson classes, and crafts, and snacks and everything in between. It’s very elaborate, and incredibly cool!

However, with the crazy week in process, I don’t plan on posting as much as normal. There will be a few fun posts though, and I plan to share a few photos (maybe even videos!) of our stage and facilities. Stay tuned for that!

Please keep our week of VBS in your prayers. This is one of the biggest events we do during the summer, making a big impact in the lives of countless children, and their families.
