Memorize The Sermon On The Mount – Week 5

Memorize the Sermon on the Mount along with me!  Here’s week 5!

The Sermon on the Mount is probably one of my favorite passage in the New Testament.  There is so much practical advice packed into these three chapters.  It’s definitely worth committing to memory.  If you’d like to join me in memorizing the Sermon on the Mount during 2011, here’s the first week.

Here’s my method:  I write the verses on an index card and keep it in my pocket.  Each time I reach into my pocket for my keys, I feel the card.  Every time I feel the card, I pull it out and read it.

Here’s our passage for this week:  Matthew 5:11-12.

Matthew 5:11-12

And here’s a link to the passage at Bible Gateway.

My strategy is to use the index card method as I described.  How do you memorize Scripture?

  1. That's the way that has worked for me. I'm trying to get through as much of Romans as I can. The method: Put two verses on an index card and read as often as possible every day for seven weeks (introduce two more every week so that at the height, there'll be 14 verses, but you should know 10 of those verses pretty well). After those seven weeks, put them on a list to do once a week for seven weeks, then once a month for seven months. Hopefully, at that point, they'll be in the brain.

    • That sounds like a great method for memorization! Thanks for sharing. But how do you keep it all straight? I think I'd get confused as to what section is daily, weekly, monthly…

I may have to "borrow" this idea. 😉

      Thanks!

  2. If I can track down the cards I had, I'll figure out a way to shoot them your way. I learned it back in Campus Crusade in college (90-94). Just this last portion of my journey have I lost the template, but it makes it simple–kind of like an attendance sheet where you'll have 3-5 going at any one time.
